ACN E-Newsletter July 30, 2008

Dear Animal Compassion Networkers,

We have some really wonderful things for both your pets and homeless animals coming up soon!

This Saturday, August 2, 2008, we'll be at WOXL's Rockin RiverFest at the French Broad River Park located off Amboy Rd. Show off your pooch in the Rockin’ RiverFest Dog Parade, organized by Animal Compassion Network, with the opportunity to win a prize for cutest, smallest or biggest dog as voted by our celebrity judges. Costume is optional. Registration begins at 11am and the parade begins at 11:30am. Shuttle service is provided from the parking lot. We'll also be showcasing our foster dogs for adoption, so if you are a dog foster family, please let Ann Barron know if you want to participate.

Next Saturday, August 9, EarthFare at Westgate is hosting “Dog Days of Summer,” a benefit for Animal Compassion Network. Along with enjoying the BBQ and an Ice Cream Social, you can support ACN by shopping at EarthFare that day. EarthFare will donate 5% of all of the days store sales to ACN! Wow! The Vegetarian BBQ will begin at 12 noon on the front patio along with entertainment from Sherri Lynn and the Mountain Friends Band. The Ice Cream Social will take place in Earth Fare’s Community Room inside the store. Kids will also be invited to decorate sugar cookies in the shape of dog bones and get their face painted during the Social. Looking for away to get your dog recognized? Enter your pooch into a Best Guardian Look-a-like contest or a Best Dressed contest and win a Pet-Friendly Gift Bag from Earth Fare, along with a plaque recognizing your winner. You are invited to bring a picture of your dog along with your name, your pet’s name, address, phone number and category you wish to enter. Drop your information off at Earth Fare/Westgate or Pet Harmony by August 8. Winners will be announced at the August 9 BBQ and must be present to pick up your prize. Still want a chance to win something for your favorite dog? Purchase raffle tickets to win a pet gift basket valued at over $90 compliments of EarthFare. All proceeds from this event will help to benefit Animal Compassion Network’s Foster/Adoption Program. We do still need about 5 volunteers for Dog Days of Summer. If you're interested, please email Krista Luck at lovescotties3@yahoo.com.

Please Save the Date - Thursday, November 13, 2008, for the Fifth Annual Taste of Compassion, our signature event that includes a wine tasting, live music and a terrific silent auction. Event sponsorships are going fast, so please email Ann McMartin at annmcmartin@hotmail.com today if you are interested in getting your business associated with this sell-out event for animal lovers.

Congratulations to Priscilla Karvonen, winner of the spring raffle! I love to see someone so deserving win. Priscilla and her husband Tom dedicated weeks to painting the interior of Pet Harmony before the Grand Opening and they just adopted our very special Katie, a dog whose people are moving to London! In typical ACN-volunteer fashion, Priscilla has donated several of her raffle prizes back to us for the Taste of Compassion silent auction this fall. Volunteers like Priscilla, Tom and all of you are what make the ACN world go 'round.

I'm excited to report that Pet Harmony is saving lives hand over fist. In just the last three weeks, we've pulled 3 dogs and 8 cats from the Buncombe County shelter! Come meet them at Pet Harmony, our pet store for rescued pets! Speaking of Pet Harmony, we're getting rave reviews about Sheila Hipps, our new groomer with 25 years of experience. Make your appointment today by calling 775-2718; 40% of your grooming fees go to saving homeless pets! Please tell all of your friends about this easy way to save lives.

After you pamper your pets, treat yourself to something special, too. Every Body is offering a 20% discount on a massage to anyone who brings a donation for ACN to their appointment! Call (828) 777-5992 for more information or to schedule your pampering session.

Important Program Note: Since January 2008, the demand on ACN's spay/neuter assistance has tripled. In order to ensure that the funding is available to those who need it most, the ACN Board of Directors has decided to discontinue selling our $35 Subsidized Vouchers and move all available spay/neuter funding to our Betty Fund Spay/Neuter Assistance Program for low-income pet guardians. While the voucher program was a nice program for all pet guardians to enjoy, there are just too many families and pets who need the funding in this economy and they have to be our first priority. Of course, we are fortunate to have the Humane Alliance Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic right here in our own backyard and they offer extremely low rates to the general public without proof of need. Appointments may be made directly at (828) 252-2079. Those needing low-income assistance are encouraged to download the Betty Fund Application at www.animalcompassionnetwork.org or by visiting Pet Harmony. We can help!

For more information and details about these events and the s/n program change, please visit us at www.animalcompassionnetwork.org.

Hope to see you all out and about for the animals!

Yours in rescue,
Eileen
