ACN E-Newsletter: September 23, 2008

Hello Animal Compassion Networkers,

The results are in and 76 lives were saved at last weekend's Subaru Pet Adoptathon! Our guest groups were thrilled to find homes for so many of their animals, especially some of their harder-to-place pets. Howlin' For Spirit/Dachshund Rescue adopted out 6 dogs, including one with severe neurological deficits and another very senior dog. We always say there's a home for everyone if we can just give them long enough to find it.

Giving them time is exactly what ACN did for 8 Haywood County Animal Shelter dogs who were heading back to euthanasia after not being adopted over the weekend. As has become our tradition, ACN transferred all 8 remaining Haywood County Shelter dogs (7 others were adopted) into ACN foster homes, where they will be given the time they need to find a family. Some might take a little while to recover from their experiences before they will be ready to meet adopters, like Flicka - the Catahoula Leopard dog who was obviously kicked repeatedly and now wears the evidence of it in her jaw and in her spirit. But we're already seeing how well she responds to affection and kindness. After seeing her curled up in Linda's lap at Pet Harmony the other day, she is already well on her way to trusting again.

Shelter cats also had a great weekend! At the end of the Subaru Pet Adoptathon, ACN transferred in 19 cats from Asheville Humane Society (AHS) and 2 more from the Rutherford County Animal Shelter.  That's in addition to the dozens of AHS cats now living in or who have been adopted from the Pet Harmony cat habitats.

A huge thanks once again to Prestige Subaru for their title sponsorship! Those 76 homeless cats and dogs owe their lives to Subaru and all of you dedicated volunteers who worked the event and fostered for us.

You don't have to foster a pet to help them! You can sponsor a pet for only $100 donation at http://www.animalcompassionnetwork.org/sponsor-a-pet. (Don't forget, with the holidays looming, Pet Sponsorships make an easy, hassle-free, meaningful and LIFESAVING gift for everyone on your list.)

While you are there, check out the rest of our new website! Thanks again to Suzi Katz of Alice Web Design for donating her time (much more than she bargained for) and considerable talent to making our new website such a glorious reality. If anyone you know is looking for a web designer, I can recommend Suzi as the best in the business. She is fast and efficient, creative and really, really patient. But best of all, I described a complicated vision and then watched as it came alive - but with just the right improvements. It's a rare person who can interpret someone else's ideas and create a final product with such accuracy and flair. Suzi devoted almost a month of her professional time to helping homeless pets. It is professionals like Suzi who most deserve our support and business in return.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 13 for the 5th Annual Taste of Compassion. I'll see you all there with lots more Happy Tails to tell about the dogs and cats we work so hard to save every day.

Please remember to shop for your pet food and supplies at Pet Harmony, where all of the proceeds fund our lifesaving work. When you sign up for grooming and training, a huge percentage also goes to help homeless pets. But go ahead to www.animalcompassionnetwork.org and real all about it!

Yours in rescue,
Eileen
